Update April 2026- Lakeshore information signs.
As I mentioned in my report last year the GTLASS PAINTED TURTLE PROJECT has evolved from habitat protection to educational awareness. The grant funding provided is being used for information boards at the public access point and various areas around the lake.
To date, the new signs are almost ready for printing with colourful and informative displays to be installed at the public access/fishing dock and strategic points along the shoreline and East View road.
"Ice off" was early this year and conditions are looking challenging with already low water levels and a hot dry summer predicted, this coupled with low snow pack could produce some challenges for lake side residents and the wildlife species. Low water levels are not the only danger for certain species as an unusually cold spring a few years ago caused the death of some young turtle hatchlings who emerged from their nests early and died due to the unseasonably cold conditions.
The the turtle project is a collaborative effort between GTLASS , Nature Trust of BC (NTBC) and the Penticton Indian Band, (PIB). It is hoped the educational displays will make visitors and residents more aware of species habitat protections.
